A summer love affair

I have a summer romance. And, it's pretty intense. Well, as intense as things can get between a girl and a treadmill.

Yes, this previous hater of the treadmill, is now having a hot love affair with it.

I'm pretty certain I previously hated it because of my craptastic condo gym

I tend to look like I'm near heat stroke and rather irritated in that craptastic place ... maybe those two go together.

Unfortunately, I didn't escape the heat in the craptastic gym; I walked right into it. As an added bonus, my treadmill would stop mid-run occasionally.

But, running outside in Florida in the summer made me think my love affair with running was over. I debated taking a break from it. I wondered if I'd ever love it again.

Then, while on vacation, I found a treadmill that didn't stop mid-run in an adequately cooled gym, and I ran my farthest distance ever on a treadmill: 4.5 miles. And, I loved it. And, I realized it wasn't running that I had lost my love for, it was running in the summer.

Currently, I'm visiting South Carolina, and I have access to an incredible gym with beautiful treadmills. And, I'm having a hard time not running endlessly every day. I can't stay away.

I love you, treadmill (at least until the fall).

Do you love the treadmill or hate it? How do you cope with summer running? What is your longest distance on the treadmill?

  1. Really, I hate the treadmill. I lovingly refer to it as the dreadmill. I used to love it. I have a really nice Nordic Track that hubby bought for me when we moved into our house and my old one died. I walked on it hours and hours. For walking it's fine. Running, not so much. But I think most of it is I need the outside when I run. The distraction, the sun, the moon, whatever. So I think you are super awesome for loving the treadmill. Keep it up!

    1. I distract myself with TV on the treadmill. I still prefer the outdoors ... when it's not ridiculously hot and humid.

  2. I hate the treadmill but realize that sometimes it's necessary to use it. I like the distraction and scenery of running outside. My best advice for coping with summer running is to go early or late in the day. I made the mistake of trying to run this afternoon in full sun/heat/humidity - it was a disaster.

    1. I like the distraction of running outside (and with other people), too. At least the treadmill has made me not give up on running during the summer.

  3. Wow. That's pretty serious. I run in Florida, but I don't mind the heat. I go super early in the morning and it's tolerable. I don't think I could ever love the treadmill, but I'm glad you found something that works well for beating the heat!

    1. You're smart for going super early. I'm not a super early kind of girl, so it's the treadmill for me!

  4. I actually like the treadmill! Saturday I did my long run of 14 miles on it. That's the longest distance I've done on it. I just can't take running in this heat either!

    1. Holy cow! Way to go, girl! As much as I like it right now, I can't fathom 14 miles on it. You rock!

  5. I didn't mind running on the treadmill when I had a gym membership as long as I had TV to distract me. I don't feel like I use my muscles the same way on the treadmill as the road though.

My new favorite summer running trick is to vacation somewhere cooler. ;) We spent a week on an island in the Puget Sound and although it was quite hilly, the cool temps were wonderful. I ran my longest distance yet, 6.5 miles.
